Vehicle Airbags

Airbags are one of the most essential parts of vehicle safety. In the incidence of an accident, they can protect the driver and passengers of the vehicle from harm. Over the past twenty years, since airbags were introduced to the auto market, there have been great changes in the way that airbags have been created, implemented into vehicles and the safety features that were included in the airbags.

Twenty years ago, airbags were only available in the steering wheel, to protect the driver from harm in case of an accident. Nowadays, airbags are present in the front of the vehicle on the driver and passenger side of the vehicle. The airbags on the passenger side of the vehicle are further from the passenger and are therefore larger than the airbags which are present in the steering wheel, on the driver's side of the vehicle.

What is the life of airbags? Airbags can last for years, depending on if the vehicle has been in any accidents and the airbags have been launched. After a vehicle has been in an accident, the vehicle should be inspected for proper working airbags. This is an essential part of continued safety of the vehicle.

How do airbags work? When the vehicle has a force, and the airbags are launched, a ball within a tube in a magnet in the middle of the airbag becomes launched - which in most cases will create an electrical current, allowing for the release of the airbag. Gold is used for the purpose of electric currents. Other methods such as gas and heat have been used to ensure that airbags are able to deploy quicker, meaning that the passengers and drivers in the vehicles are safer in the case of an accident.

Airbags are also becoming present on the side of the vehicle and are used to cover the side glass in the vehicle. This can save countless car accident victims from being embedded with glass and being injured within the accident. Most often, these airbags are deployed in the case of a vehicle rollover.

How long do airbags stay deflated? Most airbags stay active for an average of one to six seconds. This allows enough time for the initial impact of the vehicle to be over, and helps to reduce the harm that airbags can have to the passengers and drivers of the vehicle.

Nowadays, there are many types of airbags which can deploy in different types of vehicle accident situations. Most vehicles have two varieties of airbags which allow the passenger and driver to have different types of airbags, depending on the situation of the accident or the force the vehicle has hit something. The sensors that are used in present and future vehicles are sensitive, allowing the vehicle to detect which type of accident or hit has occurred, allowing for specialized deployment.

With the technology, airbags are becoming safer in vehicles. The instances of passengers and drivers becoming injured by airbags are decreasing with these safety measures that are being taken.
