Taking Steps to Make Your Car Last

The days of flipping cars every few years seem long ago. In these frugal times, the key is to make sure your car lasts as long as possible. To do this, you need to take some basic steps. An ounce of prevention will lead to a very long life for your car.

Follow Manufacturer Recommendations

You often read of advice that speaks in absolute terms regarding the car of vehicles. While generalities are okay, it goes without saying that a Ferrari needs different care compared to the maintenance of a Toyota truck . This is an extreme example, but is just as applicable to the different car requirements of a Volkswagen Jetta and Mini Cooper. Every car is designed with its own needs, so break out the owner's manual that comes with it and follow the recommendations religiously.

Don't Be Cheap

When it comes time to do something to your car, don't be a cheapskate. If you are going to put gas in, go with the premium if your car calls for it. Premium will get rid of knocks and keep fuel filters and injectors from clogging as quickly as lower grades of gas.

With oil, go with a quality brand that will take the wear and tear you put on your engine. This is particularly true if you drive in the city and rush hour traffic every day. Since this is most of us, the quality of oil you buy should be critical. Go with a top synthetic brand like Mobile One or Castrol. The top synthetic oils cost more, but your engine will last significantly longer which will save you money in the long run.

Automatic Transmissions

If you have a car with an automatic transmission, it is easy to develop the bad habit of using the park position on the transmission instead of the emergency brake. This can lead to stress on the transmission. A stressed transmission is one that doesn't last particularly long.

Lead Foot Larry

I have a sports car. While obeying all laws [cough], I do like to give it a bit of exercise whenever possible. If you feel the same way, keep in mind that the exercise is going to age the car quicker than if you drive like your grandparents. This means you'll need tyres.shtml>tyres.shtml> tires more often, brakes more often and the car simply will not last forever.

Everybody is trying to save a buck these days for obvious reasons. When it comes to getting the most out of your car, it is important to realize you need to spend a little to save a lot in the long run. Take care of your car and it will take care of you.
