Electric Vehicle Conversion Guide - Convert Your Car to Run on Electric Power

Are you concerned about rising gasoline prices? Back in 2008, the world was facing an energy crisis. Crude oil prices were touching $150 per barrel and that has pushed local gas prices to historical heights. Many car owners were having a tough time trying to balance their monthly budget. Those that could not afford had to abandon their vehicle at home and use the public transportation. Our automobiles have been depending on fossil fuel for far too long. There are a lot of researches done on alternative energy but what we need is a solution right now. One practical option is to use electricity to power our cars. Unfortunately, a new electric car is still relatively expensive. To own an electric vehicle (EV), you have to perform your own conversion.

The first step to a retrofitting project is to get an electric vehicle conversion guide. There are many EV guides available from the bookstores or on the web. To retrofit a car to run on electricity is quite simple. The idea is to remove the internal combustion engine and replace it with a DC electric motor. Since the engine is gone, all its associated parts such as gas tank, fuel lines, exhaust pipe, radiator, fuel pumps etc are now redundant and to be removed as well.

The next step is to connect the motor to the existing transmission. This can be a complicated process. It is important to have the motor and the transmission shafts to be perfectly aligned. Any misalignment will reduce the efficiency of the motor hence affecting the performance of the EV. To join both of the shafts, you will need to use a universal coupler. All the parts required for an electric car conversion will be listed in the EV conversion guide.
