Laguna Beach Car Accidents Take Their Tragic Toll

Laguna Beach car accident attorneys have long known the tragic toll heavy traffic has brought to the city. With a population of nearly 24,00 people, Laguna Beach in Orange County, California is a popular seaside resort and artist community. Unfortunately, the city has also been faced with heavy traffic congestion and a number of tragic car accidents.

The combination of tourists, bicyclists and winding roads has led to a number of car collisions in this resort town. Also presenting a danger is adjacent Pacific Coast Highway, where many have been injured or killed.

In Laguna Beach, there are over 20 beaches, broken up by land formations. The major roads serving the city are Highway 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) and Highway 133, a road that passes through Laguna Canyon. Residents and drivers familiar with these roads tend to tailgate and speed along these roads during rush hour commutes, causing many Laguna Beach car crashes.

Between 2001 and 2003, Laguna Beach had seven fatal car accidents, according to reports gathered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In 2006, Laguna Beach car accident statistics reported by the California Highway Patrol's Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) were like many coastal cities in Southern Orange County. Overall, one person was killed and 128 people were injured in Laguna Beach car collisions. Those who drove while intoxicated were responsible for 15 car crash injuries. Pedestrian accidents in the city killed one and injured 16. Laguna Beach bicycle accidents injured seven and motorcycle accidents injured five.

Laguna Beach has some of the most dangerous roads in Orange County. Laguna Canyon Road is one of the deadliest in America. Anything from Big Bend road farther out is unsafe, said one resident. Traffic in the canyon is extremely dangerous, with two fatalities in one month. The other problem is that Big Bend is inherently dangerous for kids. Bicycling in the city is also risky, especially along the coast highway, which is no less dangerous for pedestrians as several jaywalkers have been killed there.

In terms of intersections, one resident called the crossing at Park Avenue at Third Street dangerous, crazy and a nightmare. Another local called the intersection the most treacherous area in Laguna Beach. Traffic there is very heavy during work and school commute hours. A stop sign at the intersection was finally approved in July of 2008.

California Highway Patrol records show that there was a positive note in 2008. In Orange County, preliminary data indicate that car accident fatalities dropped about nine percent from 2007 to 2008.
