California car accidents are a danger to city commuters everywhere. When you are driving, your life can change in an instance. One minute, you can be happily minding your own business, and the next sitting in a smoldering pile of wrecked steel, wondering what the heck happened. What happened is that you've been in a car accident.
Even the best drivers are involved in a car collision on occasion. It is important to be prepared when this happens to you. Following is a list of four things you should do in case you are involved in a car accident:
1. Before you ever even step foot into your car, make sure you have your insurance needs taken care of. In most states, you must be insured in order to legally drive. You should always have proof of your insurance in the car that you are driving. It is also an excellent idea to keep a few particular items in your car that can make your life easier. These include items such as a pen and paper, camera and cell phone. Many phones today have a built in camera device which can be very helpful.
2. If the cars in the car crash are drivable and no one has been personally injured, move the vehicles to the side of the road. cars left in the middle of the road can cause danger to others. You should also be sure that your hazard lights have been turned on. Then call the police. The police will tell you when you can leave the car accident.
3. The next step is to get out of your car and exchange information with the other driver. The information that you need to collect includes the driver of the car's name and contact information, along with their insurance provider, policy number, car license plate number and the driver's license number. Also write down distinguishing characteristics of the other car, such as make, model, and color, as well as notes about its damage. If you have that camera mentioned earlier, take pictures of both cars.
4. As a protective measure, file a report with your insurance company, even if you chose not to have the insurance company make repairs to your car. Also, do not admit responsibility for a car crash, as this may release your insurance company from the obligation of paying for damages.
Car accidents are never fun, but follow the advice in this article and you will at least be prepared to deal with the situation.
