5 Tips For Driving Safely Next to Large Trucks

Big rig truck s, those monsters of the road, can be intimidating to drive near. But given their importance in distributing goods throughout the US, it is unlikely that they will go away any time soon. So try to follow these 5 tips to stay safe when driving near truck s.

1. Give semi truck s lots of stopping room. This is a forty+ ton vehicle we are talking about. They require much more room to stop than a car or light truck .

2. Pass tractor trailers on the left side. If you pass on the right, you are asking for trouble because these truck s have very limited sight on that side. Stay out of a truck 's blindside, or you may find yourself blindsided.

3. Don't get too close to a tractor trailer. A vehicle this size will completely block your view of what is ahead, so if a situation arises that requires the truck to suddenly slow down or swerve to avoid debris, you want to have plenty of room to maneuver.

4. Don't drive alongside a tractor trailer. Either go ahead or fall behind. Make a decision and get away from the truck quickly but safely.

5. At intersections where tractor-trailer truck s are coming from another direction and turning towards your vehicle, you should leave extra space in your lane to allow for the extra room needed for the truck .

This is all common sense stuff, but things most people don't think about because they are so used to driving with truck s on the road. With the radio blasting and the mind distracted with thoughts of the day ahead, it is easy to mindlessly drive near these big rigs. Unfortunately, that can create a dangerous situation for you, the truck , and other drivers on the road. So stay cognizant and show tractor trailers enough respect for everyone to stay safe.
