Tips on Preventing Condensation in the Fuel Tank

Condensation in your fuel tank is something to be avoided. Your car may refuse to start and it causes rust in your gas tank, among other things. These suggestions help reduce fuel tank condensation.

Grasp why condensation appears in gas tanks. A gas tank will eventually be covered in condensation because of a temperature change. Driving on a road creates friction between the car and the hot road. Condensation is created in your fuel tank due to heat transferred that mixes with the colder gasoline. It builds up on any surface until finally, the condensation will form drops of water which will fall into your gas.

The amount of air in the tank should be limited. Air contains a specific amount of water vapor in it, so by limiting the amount of air in the fuel tank, you can reduce the amount of condensation also.

Keep your fuel tank full or nearly full of fuel. Your tank should always be greater then three-quarters to one half full. You don't want your tank to run low so you should fill it up at regular intervals. This will lessen surface area inside the tank on which condensation can develop. This is a good trick to remember during humid or wet weather when you get a big change in temperature.

Condensation nowadays isn't as much of a problem as previously. Many years ago, gasoline didn't contain the amount of ethanol that it does today. Gas now contains at least 10% ethanol and this tends to mix well with water. When little condensation takes place in your fuel tank, the presence of ethanol takes the moisture to the engine and causes it to be burned up.

Give a fuel additive a shot. If you can't get gas that contains at least some percentage of ethanol, then tyr a fuel additive from your local auto store. Because gas is lighter than water, it will float on top of condensation instead of mixing with it. So the water can build up and sit at the bottom of the gas tank, causing it to rust away. Use the additive and follow the directions on the container. It goes straight into the gas tank. Condensation can be reduced when the additive is combined with pure gasoline as it is similar to ethanol. Fuel tank condensation will have no effect if you're using fuel that contains water-soluble elements like ethanol or fuel additives.
