Most Inglewood car accident lawyers will admit that car accidents plague the majority of major cities. With a population over 130,000, Inglewood has grown dramatically. Yet, compared to similar sized cities in Southern California, Inglewood has a higher than average rate of California car accidents. According to the State Office of Traffic Safety, Inglewood was rated third for hit-and-run collisions and fifth for nighttime car collisions in cities with a population of 100,000 to 150,000 in the year 2000. The city topped the list for fatal and injured pedestrian victims involving children under the age of 15. And it placed second for all pedestrian fatalities and injuries involving a motor vehicle. According to the Office of Traffic Safety, these statistics helped place Inglewood 11th out of 45 in overall traffic collisions.
These high Inglewood car accident statistics are regrettable in a city of this size. Community programs that stress driver safety should be combined with increased traffic enforcement to reduce these tragic accidents.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that a total of 17 fatal motor vehicle accidents occurred in Inglewood between 2001 and 2003.
In addition, the CHP reported that in 2006, there were six Inglewood car accident deaths in the city and 563 traffic accident-related injuries. Motorcycle accidents killed two and injured 22. DUI collisions were responsible for two fatalities and 32 injuries. Two pedestrians were killed and 65 were injured in city traffic collisions. These statistics add to Los Angeles' grim car accident numbers, which according to traffic collision data reported by the Los Angeles Department of Transportation, amounted to 50,317 car collisions in one recent year.
To combat its traffic accident rate, Inglewood set up red-light cameras at fifteen of its most dangerous intersections. To increase driver awareness of City stop signs, Inglewood proposed an on-demand visual queue by imbedding multiple high-intensity LED light modules into its standard stop signs. These light modules are activated by an approaching vehicle at a pre-determined distance from the stop sign. The goal is to improve a motorist's ability to observe and safely stop their vehicle.
Improving traffic control technology can help reduce the number of accidents in a city. Targeting these efforts at high-incidence streets and intersections is a step in the right direction.
